What's happening: After a year of pure survival mode, I'm reflecting on the goal-setting frameworks I've shared and what they taught me about giving myself permission to thrive again.
What you'll find here: A recap of the 4 goal-setting steps we've explored together, and why they matter more than ever when the world feels uncertain.
The real talk: Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is decide your dreams still matter, even when everything around you says to just survive.

I didn't set any real goals last year. Well, that's not entirely true. I set one: read 24 books. Two books a month felt manageable, right? Except I didn't even come close to completing it (I only read 10).
Last year felt like survival. Between my health challenges, career uncertainty, and honestly just existing as a first-gen Latina in a world that increasingly felt hostile to my community - setting goals felt almost... privileged? Like, who was I to think about thriving when so much of my energy went toward just getting through each day?
But as we moved into this new year, something shifted.
I decided to give myself another chance to live life. Not just survive it, but actually live it. To make space for my own goals and maybe - just maybe - thrive a little.
That's what sparked this four-part series on goals. Not because I had it all figured out, but because I was trying to figure out how to approach goal-setting differently. How to build towards something instead of just chasing checkmarks like I used to.
How These 4 Pieces Fit Together
Over the past few newsletters, I shared four different ways to think about goals. And as I reflect on them together, I realize they're not separate frameworks - they're different angles of the same practice: approaching your goals with self-awareness and flexibility.
The Word of the Year (Intention): When specific goals feel too heavy, start with how you want to feel. My word is "adventure" - a reminder that even in uncertain times, I can choose to engage with life rather than just endure it.
Identifying the Gaps: You can't get where you're going without knowing where you are. This isn't about beating yourself up for not being "there" yet - it's about honest assessment. What's the distance between your current reality and where you want to be?
Shedding: This was the hardest one for me. Goals kept failing because I was trying to add without releasing anything. I had to shed my perfectionist eldest daughter identity - that version of me who believed her worth came from exceeding everyone's expectations. Letting that go made space for adventure.
Finding Motivation: And when motivation gets hard to find (which it has been, a lot, especially when I fear for my safety and that of my loved ones and community), knowing where to tap into it becomes essential. Sometimes motivation is just reminding yourself why it matters to keep going.
These four steps work together because they honor the messy reality of being human. Goals aren't meant to be rigid checkboxes that we either achieve or fail at. They're meant to evolve with us, to flex when life gets hard, to remind us what we're building towards when everything feels uncertain.
And honestly? There's something so hopeful about that. Even in a world that feels heavy, even when motivation is hard to find, even when I didn't complete last year's single goal - I can still decide my dreams matter. I can still give myself another chance.
Because clarity found me as I wrote these newsletters: there is still value in going after our dreams. Especially during tough times, it's important to take care of yourself. And taking care of yourself includes making space for what lights you up, not just what keeps you afloat.
